Short Film Review: Halo Legends, The Duel

The Duel is really fun. As is typical with anime and Asian film the protagonist does not reach a pleasant end but the film has an intense amount of action that is satisfying and fun to watch although a bit unrealistic. It also gives some depth to the Covenant race of Elites making it clearer why they descented in Halo 2. The artwork is a bit confusing but a nice mix of anime and computer technology. Much of the design is very Asian in style which does not exactly clash with franchise but it does seem a bit out of place. Overall, a fun film to watch.

PROS: More personal, great surprises for Halo fans, interesting ending.

CONS: The plot goes nowhere, little to appreciate for those unfamiliar with the franchise.

So when I first heard that George Lucas was re-releasing all of the Star Wars movies in 3D, starting with Episode 1 in 2012 and releasing one per year, I wasn't sure what to think. On one side I can sympathize with all of the Lucas haters out there who think that Lucas is doing too much to make more and more money. However, on the other hand being the Star Wars fan that I am, I knew I was going to see it anyway no matter what because...it's Star Wars...in 3D!

So those who know me well know that I am a very big Star Wars fan. I think I actually do a decent job of keeping this on the down low for those who don't know me well, but it always comes out eventually. I admit, I love Star Wars. I'm not exactly sure why, but that's the way it's been since I was young and first saw the original Star Wars movies for the first time. I've never stopped loving them. I even went so far as to make a number of fan films as a teenager. You can also find my Star Wars/Star Trek crossover film here.

PROS: Always nice to here a fully dramatized Star Wars adaptation, some forshadowing that doesn't occur in the comics, better editing

CONS: Extremely melodramatic, overenthusiastic voice actors.

BOTTOM LINE: Probably the worst installment of the Tales of the Jedi series, though it introduces characters and situations that would live on.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Rand faces his greatest threat yet, hundreds of Aes Sedai who want to subdue him and take him to their tower.

PROS: Great buildup and one of the best endings in the series, pivotal character development, Perrin is back.

CONS: Little action before the ending, not much of interest going on outside of Rand's storyline.

BOTTOM LINE: This one can get a bit boring at times, but it is still one of the best books in the series, due primarily to the amazing ending and the build up to it.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Rand al'Thor finally begins to fulfill his role as the Dragon Reborn, attempting to unify the lands he is responsible for.

PROS: Progressions of the story, thrilling ending (though not as good as past endings), general drive, buildup, and motivation.

CONS: Little action until the end, lots of conversations.

BOTTOM LINE: While certainly not a book I would skip, Fires of Heaven is not the strongest in the series, even coupled with some of Robert Jordan's strengths in writing cultures, characters, and strong endings.

	DEVELOPED BY: Bethesda Game Studios

PUBLISHED BY: Bethesda Softworks

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: You play as the last Dovakiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin (the Nordic Dragon-god of destruction) poses to Skyrim and Tamriel.

PROS: Immersion, realism, aesthetic variety, gameplay, character development, and UI work better than they did in the previous Elder Scrolls release. It's possibly the most immersive game I've ever played. The world is huge and yet the attention to tiny little details is astounding.

CONS: There are occasional glitches with the laws of physics, but not enough to be terribly distracting. Despite the welcome addition of dual-wielding, the melee combat system is basically just as mediocre as it was in Oblivion. Also, while the menu UI is better than Oblivion's, it still seems like it was built for consoles, and doesn't work with PCs very well.

BOTTOM LINE: Skyrim is escapism to perfection. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time in it if you're going to try it at all. Because you will.

This short story is a little different from the others that have preceded it. For one, it takes the form of multiple viewpoints, whereas the previous shorts used one viewpoint only. This brings a sense of urgency, activity, and a build up to the stories climax. Although this is not the last story in the Lost Tribe of the Sith</i.> it does have a sense of finality to it. It is the end of this story within the story, like the end of a chapter. Apart from a view moments that seemed confusing, it was well written and engaging.

Savior takes place twenty-five years after the events of the first story in the Lost Tribe of the Sith epic, ten years after the preview installment Paragon

This short starts out slow but ends with mounting tension, and a twist ending that we haven't seen in the previous two. Once again, the characters do not seem to fit themselves. They seem good, yet they do bad things, they are Sith. But, like the first two, the plot moves quickly and a lot happens in a short space. This makes it seem rushed, but also fast paced.

Paragon takes place fifteen years after the events of Skyborn which would also place it after The Fall of the Sith comic collection. The Sith have fallen elsewhere, and this is truly an isolated lost tribe of the Sith.

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Skyborn

The best part about Skyborn is the new character, Adari. You can tell by the way her thought process is written, who she is. The way in which she goes up against the traditional beliefs of her people is also well played. It makes it seem like an alien version of our own dark ages. The Sith also seem more appropriately sinister. This is a slight change from what it was like in the first short story, so there was an unexpected and unnecessary shift in character.

Skyborn takes place during and immediately after Precipice from the point of view of Adari.

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Precipice

Precipice is well written. It starts with a bang, creates tension, escalates, and leaves the reader interested and wanting more. The characters are easy to invest in and genuinely likable. This strength is also a problem, however. This is supposed to be about a lost tribe of Sith, not angels. These are supposed to be the bad guys. Therefore, they have to be easy to invest in, but not necessarily likable. Because of the brevity required for the story, it also feels rushed, moving instantly from one problem to the next. But overall, it was enjoyable and left me wanting more.

The story takes place on or around the end of The Golden Age of the Sith comic collection. This is confirmed with references to Naga Sadow sending them off on a mission to prepare for the coming battle with the republic.

PROS: Possibly the best development of a culture in the series, some of the best character development in the series, plenty of action, starts and ends with a bang.

CONS: Long, Rand starts down a path that not everyone will appreciate.

Ages of Myth: Tradition vs. Originality

This is one of the biggest conflicts within creative writing. Do I go with what has been tried and proved to be popular, or do I try to come up with some crazy new idea that has never been done before? First off, it is nearly impossible to come up with a completely new idea. Almost everything has been done before. So my answer to that question would be: you've got to do a little of both.

PROS: Excellent throwback to the 1940s, exciting action sequences, patriotic, Chris Evans' performance.

CONS: Somewhat fake sci-fi sequences, villain not fully developed, several undeveloped portions of the plot.

PROS: A good stopping point for those not willing to continue the series, further development of cultures, a continued build up of threat.

CONS: Marginal development of the main character, plot seems forced, some character plot-lines contain no action.

CONS: overly emphasized action, not as emotionally compelling as it should have been.

PROS: Very good characterization and voice; extremely hilarious and identifiable (for women)

CONS: The plot doesn't go anywhere; Feels repetitive after a while.

PROS: Intriguing original idea with much thought put into its development; Excellent characters and plot development.

CONS: The plot seems to focus too much on the development of the idea and less on the progression of the story.

Inspiration: Walks, London Walks Summary

So it looks like we got a lot of ideas especially for a major city within the story of Ages of Myth. My favorite walks were Fleet Street and St. Pauls, Westminster and St. James's, Bankside and Southwark, primarily for the diversity of attractions you could see in these walks and the ideas that they gave me. Had I done more walks in other places I would probably have had different ideas. Walks are only one of the many ways to obtain ideas, and an effective one too.

This walk was nice though somewhat uneventful leading past a mixture of comercial and residential districts. In London a residential area is just a string of Georgian-like architecture repeating over and over again. It is interesting to see the more quiet aspects of the city. Obviously our capital city will have residential areas, but the question is: is the city too populated or is there a lot of room. I like to think the latter, primarily because of the control-happy government who doesn't want too many people overrunning the city. Plus it's a medieval time period which means that population hasn't become a big problem and farms are still the primary location for residential housing.

The interesting thing about this walk is that it takes you through the entertainment districts of London. The type of entertainment ranged from theater to shall we say, less than wholesome entertainment. So this got me thinking about what kind of entertainment people would appreciate in the Ages of Myth. Since the government will probably be the controlling type, the entertainment will probably be controlled as well resulting in "preachy" theatrical performances. A good example would be the medieval play Everyman which is an allegorical play used in small villages to teach the people to "be good." Other forms of entertainment would definitely be used as well, but most formal entertainment would be controlled by the government.

I had the fortune of doing this walk in the rain. The walk starts near the Tower of London, moves through the financial center of London in a circle. This walk got me thinking about a few things completely unrelated to the walk itself. The weather made me start thinking about the weather in the capital city of Ages of Myth. I thought a perfect climate, a cold one, or a hot one, were overused and a big cliche, so I decided instead to go for something a little different, perhaps a windy environment where the wind blows constantly in one direction. This opens up a lot of possibilities in geography and culture which will be discussed later.

This was another enjoyable walk taking you by the Globe Theater, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London. Much of the walk is spent along the Thames river, which made me think about a large city's constant dependance on water. Most of the major cities and civilizations revolve around water, whether it's a river or an ocean. So therefore the capital city of the Ages of Myth should have a major source of water as well. Later on, we'll discuss world-building and map making where these things will be fleshed out, but for now let's just say the city is built on a major river, possibly a tidal river like the Thames in London.

This wasn't the most interesting walk I've been on. I got lost for a while, and other than a small monument to Francis Bacon, it wasn't all that interesting. However, there was a building that caught my interest. I know just enough about architecture to spot the differences between different time periods. On the walk we came upon a building that, on one end, had a round Romanesque structure with rounded arches and small windows. The remainder of the building however must have been built later for it was built in the Gothic style with pointed arches and lots of decor. This got me thinking about the capital city and the age of the buildings within it. Obviously the city will be old so it will need multiple styles to accompany the age of the buildings. This is similar to a reference in The Return of the King made by Gimli where he comments on the stonework in Gondor, and that some of it was newer and different.

Inspiration: Walks, London Westminster and St. James's

This walk was quite spectacular. The first thing you see after walking out of the Westminster Underground is Big Ben towering above you. It then takes you around the area showing you many of the governmental buildings there. It's very easy to walk with your head facing upward for the entire trip, enjoying the architecture. Since the creative focus of these walks has been on a large city, I began to think of large monuments, like Big Ben, that could be suitable to the primary city in Ages of Myth. I haven't thought of a specific monument yet, but I have begun to think about what makes a monument important. From what I've seen it is usually either historically significant, or it fulfills some other superlative to the buildings surrounding it (biggest, tallest, oldest, etc.) So this is what I'll be basing the historic monuments in the city. I'm starting to wish we had a name for this city. That will have to wait until we get to languages though. For now we'll just call it the capital city.

Inspiration: Walks, London Lambeth and South Bank

The interesting thing about this walk is the fact that it leads you through very different environments. It goes through a number of getto areas full of graffiti and a slightly poorer population. Then it moves on and follows the Thames river for a while with a spectacular view of Big Ben and the Parliment buildings. This duality would be good to combine with the city ideas I mentioned in the Central Parks walk. Obviously the entire city can't be beautiful. It's going to need some conflict. This is essential to a story anyway: the hero will need something to combat, so this will probably make it's way to the final product in one way or another.

This walk takes you through a more urban part of London, past a number of impressive acheivements in archetecture. This got me thinking about the age of the city of London. Some of the road plans were laid by the Romans themselves. I also walked past places like Samual Johnson's home, which is still in use today. In America we have a different mentality. We generally tear something down if it's too old. In London, however, it's different. So I began to think about what the age of the world within the story is. I think it would be if the civilization is relatively new, such as a colony. But these people need to come from somewhere. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to have an older civilization somewhere (not necessarily directly influencing the plot, but present nonetheless). The main characters of the story would then be a part of the "newer" civilization elsewhere. We'll figure out the geography later.

This is an interesting walk passing through all of the major parks in Central London including Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, and St. James Park, passing Buckingham Palace. It was in this walk that I fully realised how much London is enhanced through all of the beautiful parks which are found everywhere. Considering the dense population of London, it is impressive that they are able to have such a large number of parks. But this does a lot to beautify the city in general. Applying this to the Ages of Myth story I began to think of Urban centers within the story. I got some ideas of a beautiful capital city made of a white limestone and spotted, as London is, with beautiful green parks, assuming we want the story to have an advanced civilization like this. Another possibility could be the opposite of this: a dark perhaps industrial or undeveloped civilization. Perhaps the main character could be part of a gradual change from this level of living to a higher level. I rather like this idea, it may end up in the outline.

Inspiration: Walks, London Regent's Park

This was the first formal walk I took through parts of London. It started at Primrose Hill with a spectacular view of the city of London (Primrose Hill is perhaps the biggest hill in the city), then it moved on a nice loop through regent's park. Although the park was somewhat uneventful, I was able to glean several ideas for the Ages of Myth story. I'd like to point out that some of these ideas can be taken from anywhere and it is not necessary to be in London to get them. Moving on, Regent's park has an interesting layout, there is a circular path formation close to the center. Also there is an interesting fountain in the park which pours out water just by touching the spout. This started giving me ideas of a park in the middle of nowhere in the story, at the center of which lies a special fountain. I don't really want to do something like "the fountain of youth," but more along the lines of King Arthur and Excalibur, which seems to better fit the style of the story. Like I said these ideas can c	ome from anywhere and have little or nothing to do with place you walked through. Moving on.

Studies: Escapism in The Lord of the Rings, by Jason Hamilton

No piece of literature has ever been subject to greater controversy than The Lord of the Rings. In a book on Tolkien's writing style by Steve Walker he points out that, "The highbrow London Guardian assigned The Rings to the lowest level of literary hell, calling it 'by any reckoning one of the worst books ever written.' Yet in the same year of that unmitigated negation, a poll of no less than 25,000 English readers by the BBC and Waterstone booksellers declared Tolkien's epic the best book of the century" (Walker 1). The reason behind this controversy is unclear, but it is likely due to escapism. Yi-fu Tuan of Johns Hopkins University explains that, "'Escapism' has a somewhat negative meaning in our society and perhaps in all societies. It suggests an inability to face facts - the real world. We speak of escapist literature, for instance, and we tend to judge as escapist places such as mega-shopping malls, fancy resorts, theme parks, or even picture-perfect suburbs. They all lack - in a single wo rd, weight." (Tuan 5) Some would argue that the fact that a text is popular makes it worthy of study. For instance, Walker asks,"What if the variety of reaction to Tolkien's prose were indication of the richness of his art? If varied response is any kind of key to complexity, Tolkien's art is kaleidoscopic" (Walker 3). Indeed the question of whether or not fantasy deserves study is a valid one. Deborah O'Keefe asks in her book, "Why, just now, do so many readers find it thrilling to follow Dorothy into the Emerald City of Oz (1900), Bilbo Baggins into his hobbit hole (1937), and Harry Potter into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (1997)? Today, fantasy is an enormously popular category, not a neglected stepgenre shivering in the shadows" (O'Keefe 12). This is certainly true: fantasy, particularly Tolkien's fantasy, has become too big to ignore. The biggest problem, is that many choose to ignore it because of escapism. If it is possible to eliminate escapism as an obstacle, it would open up a savory buffet of possibilities in literary criticism.

Studies: Escapism and Beowulf, by Jason Hamilton

This is an article I wrote about the presence of Escapism in literature, specifically in Beowulf. Escapism has often been frowned on in the academic community and it was for this reason that I decided to write this. Also, check out our new list of Arthurian Literature here.

Escapism can work together with reality to create a morally uplifting story. For example, Beowulf seems to go to great lengths to improve the reality of the story, despite the fantasy elements. This includes the descriptions, often extensive and detailed, which makes the story more realistic. And yet Beowulf is able to discard all of these things in order to defeat Grendel, something that does not seem humanly possible. This is an example of escapism and reality working together.

Ages of Myth: The Idea

We've updated the storytelling section of the website. Currently we are developing a story, and we want to demonstrate the storytelling process through the telling of this story. See the What's This? section for more details. For now we're starting at the beginning: The Idea.

This is where it all starts. You won't go anywhere until you have an idea. Ideas can come from literally anywhere, so I won't elaborate too much on how to come up with a good idea. Just be observant, use you're own experience, look at headlines, combine those ideas, etc. There is no set way to get an idea. I do, however, highly recommend that you write all of your ideas somewhere, even the bad ones.

PROS: Amazing visuals; Intriguing story concept; An exciting return of the franchise; Great soundtrack.

CONS: The ending totally ruins everything.

BOTTOM LINE: While it is a powerful reboot of franchise, Tron Legacy does not end with the same genius as the rest of the film.

Site Update

We've made a number of additions to the site. Since it didn't seem right to group some of the classic literature with the rest of the list in the reviews section, we've created a whole new section on the left called "Studies." Here people will be able to post their scholarly reviews and essays about the different literature listed. So far we only have a list of classical literature (meaning pre-medieval lit). The rest of the other literary periods and film classics will soon follow.

In addition we've also included a section on Tolkien and two more sections currently under development: "Storytelling," and "Speculation" both of which are explained in the link.

PROS: More personal than past films; Picard AND Kirk; Good plot line; Excellent acting.

CONS: Not an action film; Feels like an extended episode of The Next Generation

BOTTOM LINE: Generations brilliantly hands the baton to the Next Generation, it may possibly be the best of the Next Generation films.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Kirk and McCoy are arrested during peace talks with the Klingons for murdering the Klingon ambassador.

PROS: The story provides a fitting end to the original series; The action is better than it has been in past films; the Shakespearean edge to the antagonism is a nice touch.

CONS: Some moments seem melodramatic; a ship that can fire while cloaked?

BOTTOM LINE: The Undiscovered Country is definitely one of the best Star Trek films and a satisfying conclusion to the original crew that we have come to love.

CONS: Perhaps a little too ridiculous at times;

BOTTOM LINE: Some fans go for the Shakespearean epic feel of Star Trek films like Wrath of Kahn and The Undiscovered Country, but for fans of a comical lighthearted film, The Voyage Home will always be their favorite.

	PUBLISHED BY: RAW Magazine

BRIEF SYNOPSIS:
Vladek, a survivor of the Holocaust tells his story to his son Arty.

Maus is indeed a classic in literature. When this graphic novel received a Pulitzer prize in 1992, it was considered controversial due to the fact that it was a comic book, generally considered juvenile. However, Maus only goes to show that a comic book can be just as important to the literary world as any other form of literature.

PROS: Same engaging gameplay; Same intricate environments; Major improvements on almost every flaw of the first game.

CONS: Combat hasn't changed much; Unnecessary language.

BOTTOM LINE: Assassin's Creed 2 is simply a huge improvement on the first game in every way.

Film Review: Star Trek II, The Wrath of Kahn

DIRECTED BY: Nicholas Meyer

STARRING: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Ricardo Montalban

PROS: Excellent writing and directing. Ricardo Montalban. Redemption from the previous film, Star Trek The Motion Picture. Stunning musical score (for the 80's).

CONS: Shatner's shining moment..."KHAAAAN!" (or is that a pro?), David Marcus (Just plain annoying. Shoo.).

BOTTOM LINE: A well-made film that captures the dynamic essence of the Original Series and takes it to an all new level at the same time. In addition, it sets the stage beautfully for the five sequels that follow. It remains to this day one of the most acclaimed of the Trek movies, by critics and fans alike.

CONS: Very slow; Overly excessive use of soon to be outdated visual effects; Really strange ending.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Harry and his friends set out on their quest to destroy the remaining Horcruxes and trigger Lord Voldemort's defeat.

As the climax of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows delves into new territory for J. K. Rowling. Unlike its predecessors the book does not take place primarily at Hogwarts but is instead driven by a linear narrative, similar to many other fantasy novels. In some areas it appears a bit slow, but since this is J. K. Rowling's first attempt at writing in this style it is understandable.

Out of all the Harry Potter books, The Half-Blood Prince is probably the most personal of all. We begin to really understand the character of Voldemort as well as Dumbledore. The book is filled with new information that we've been waiting for since the beginning.

I'm not sure which Harry Potter book is my favorite but if I were forced to pick one I might pick Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The progression of the story as well as the excitement and extremely satisfying moments reach a pinnacle with this book.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: A king when faced with death asks his wife, Alcestis, to die in his stead.

Euripides's Alcestis is a Greek Tragedy involving a king named Admetus who is given the chance, on the day of his death, to ask someone else to die in his stead. When the day comes he asks his father who refuses causing Admetus to turn to his wife, Alcestis, who agrees to die for him.
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Harry is caught up in an international competition against two other schools, a competition he did not choose to participate in. Someone else chose for him.

As the fourth installment in the Harry Potter series, The Goblet of Fire is like the rest of the books, excellent. I would probably say that the majority of readers were starting to wonder when the action was going to pick up by the end of the third book. When would Voldemort return? And we got our answer.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Harry Potter learns more of his parent's past, and he learns that a murderer and loyal follower of Lord Voldemort has escaped from the wizard prison Azkaban to kill Harry.

Once again J. K. Rowling enfolds us in her wonderful world of wizardry. The Prisoner of Azkaban is decidedly more personal than the previous books. The only complaint I have is that there was not enough of Voldemort. Even though the Dark Lord is not the focus of this book it might have been nice to have a brief appearance reminding us that he is still out there.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts for his second year of school only to find that things are not as they should be and some monster hidden somewhere in the castle is attacking students.

As I've said before, the Harry Potter series is different than any other fantasy series I've ever read. Therefore I am omitting the pros and cons in this review because the only con I can think of is that the book is perhaps a little too simple which is really what the author intended. However, it is not too simple as to take away from the rest of us who have grown out of childhood.

I've left out the pros and cons of the Harry Potter series because, it is obvious that whether there are any negative aspects to the series at all, the majority of society doesn't care. J. K. Rowling is officially the richest author in the world, and so this review and those of the other six books are more of a tribute than a review.

PROS: A satisfying end to the world; Characters develop most in this book; A villain who has lasted since Angel Fire East, is finally confronted.

CONS: The story seems drawn out; Many parts are unoriginal.

BOTTOM LINE: While somewhat slow and drawn out, The Gypsy Morph provides a good ending to an excellent trilogy.

BOTTOM LINE: A thrilling sequel to Armageddon's Children, The Elves of Cintra brings us back to the world of Shannara with further development of Elves, Elfstones, and Magic.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: In a post-apocalyptic world plagued by Demons and once-men, Logan Tom is given the task to find humanity's only hope for survival.

PROS: Easy and quick to read; excellent transition from the Word and the Void to Shannara; Well achieved blend of a post-apocalyptic novel with fantasy. Large ensemble of unique characters.

CONS: A terrible cliffhanger; Not enough contact with antagonists.

BOTTOM LINE: Possibly one of Terry Brooks' best in recent years, Armageddon's Children is a brilliant transition between two epic worlds in the Terry Brooks universe.

About StoryHobby.com

StoryHobby.com is a website focusing on all forms of storytelling. Primarily it is a review site, however, it will grow over time. The current plans for the growth of this site are divided into four phases. We are currently in Phase 1.

Phase 1: In the first phase this site will be used for just reviews. Take a look at the review lists found on the left side of this page. While we have yet to fill all of these lists with reviews, that is our eventual goal.

Phase 2: In the second phase we will begin providing quality education in the realm of storytelling. This will include basic instruction on how to write a short story, build a world, make a short film, comic book, or audio drama. As an example we will have an original story used to demonstrate each principle.

Phase 3: The third phase will expand the site to include news posts regarding different storytelling mediums. We will also be starting a podcast at the same time.

Phase 4: Once the website has built up enough of a following we will move on to phase four. This will include a forum for those who wish to sign in and discuss certain topics. Also we will begin to create original stories and post them on the site. In the spirit of Wikipedia anyone will be allowed to edit the story. Thus, as a creative group, all may participate in the formation of the perfect story. This story may then be adapted to different mediums, meaning if someone wants to make a film, comic, video game, or audio drama they may do so and it will be posted here.
