Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (1994) by Tom Veitch
REVIEW BY JASON HAMILTON
PUBLISHED BY: Dark Horse Comics
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Young Jedi Knights fight the power of the Dark Side of the Force 4,000 years before Luke Skywalker.
PROS: A decent story, elements that have lasted in the Star Wars universe.
CONS: Artwork too complex, weak story, cheesy dialogue.
BOTTOM LINE: Probably the worst installment of the Tales of the Jedi series, though it introduces characters and situations that would live on.
Knights of the Old Republic marked the start of an epic chapter in the Star Wars mythology. Some of the stories and characters show up in other Star Wars tales here and there. Unfortunately the story itself feels rushed, and is for lack of a better word: cheesy.
The very basic plot points and world-building in this story are the best part. It feels like a part of the Star Wars universe and the conflict is good despite being presented badly. This is really the only good things about the story since the presentation feels very childish.
The dialogue is probably the worst. It feels extremely rushed as if it was written in one draft with very little attention to quality. It also feels like it was written to a five year old even though the artwork and general plot would indicate otherwise.
The artwork also feels a bit rushed. The pencil work looks sloppy and all over the place making it difficult to take in.
Overall, I'd say this is definitely not a strong point in the Star Wars expanded universe, although the influence it eventually had on other Star Wars media makes it worth a look at least.
