BRIEF SYNOPSIS: 5,000 years before Luke Skywalker, the Sith make their first bold move against the Jedi and the Republic.
PROS: Ancient Star Wars-ian feel, appears familiar yet alien, good story despite some superficial elements, cliffhanger.
CONS: Somewhat superficial, artwork a little too much .
BOTTOM LINE: Although not perfect, The Golden Age of the Sith is a nice addition and background to the Star Wars universe.
Chronologically, The Golden Age of the Sith is the first piece of Star Wars literature. Even though the story is far far away from the original, it still feels like Star Wars, and it provides some fun background information on concepts like the Sith, the Jedi, and the Republic.
The artwork looks a lot like ancient Egyptian but different enough to be original. This gives it an ancient fantasy feel to it, even though it's still science fiction. This is the best part about the comic book, it looks and feels like Star Wars, but a much older version of it. It's believable as a history.
The characters and motives seem superficial. The young get-rich-quick kids, the power-hungry villain, and his competition, are not exactly original. Not much effort is placed in developing the characters.
The artwork is a little too much. There is too much detail, and it makes the it hard to follow the focus of the action. A different shading pattern would have helped. Overall, the comic is well done and a proud addition to the franchise, though it might not be too interesting to non-Star Wars fans.
