Star Wars: Fall of the Sith Empire (1998) by Kevin J. Anderson
REVIEW BY JASON HAMILTON
PUBLISHED BY: Dark Horse Comics
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: The Sith launch their attack on the Republic, and the only people in any position to stop them are Jori, and her brother.
PROS: Some symbolism, good explanation of back story.
CONS: Artwork too complex, weak story, cheesy dialogue.
BOTTOM LINE: Not the best Star Wars story, it covers some important back story, but it doesn't do a good job of it.
So let me start with the good stuff. Being a huge Star Wars fan, I was happy to see the development of the back story. Now we know the origin of the temples on Yavin IV and a legacy of the Sith that will reappear multiple times throughout the expanded universe.
The artwork is overly complex and hard to follow at times. There is an occasional use of symbolism which adds to the meaning and depth of the story. However, this is something that is easily achieved in any Star Wars story, thanks to the excellent standard for production design that George Lucas set in the beginning. Overall, the artwork is not the best.
The story is weak. It might have been a good idea at one point, but it was rushed, and ended without any struggle at all. I mean, yes we expected the good guys to win, but not that easily, not after the build-up we received in The Golden Age of the Sith. The villain Naga Sadow seemed like a decent bad guy at first, but soon became an overconfident power-hungry villain. No one really cared.
Fall of the Sith Empire takes place right after the events of The Golden Age of the Sith. I recommend it to Star Wars fans as a source for back story, but most others would probably not enjoy it on its own.
